Update to:
Improvements to Cherry Beach the Subject of TWRCA Open House Posted: Jun-03-03
On Wednesday June 4th The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation(TWRC) held an open house to lay out the plans for sprucing up Cherry Beach. This is the first Toronto Waterfront Regeneration project to get started and it seems that there is a push on to get it completed soon. It is scheduled to be completed this summer, 2003. The Architects drawings for Cherry Beach are available online. Click the image to go to the TWRC site and browse the images. The plan leaves the natural areas along Cherry Beach intact. It mainly deals with refurbishing the buildings on the site and improvements to the entrance to the beach from Cherry Street and the parking lot. Cherry Street running south from Unwin Ave will be narrowed and planted with trees at the end of this driveway will be a round turnabout with an event staging area in the centre. You can read the announcement about the plan from the Toronto Waterfront Revitilization Corportation's web site CHERRY BEACH REVITALIZATION UNDERWAY FOR SUMMER 2003. You can see images of the plan at the following link Images of Cherry Beach There will be one change to the Martin Goodman Trail from Unwin Avenue to the parking lot. It's alignment will be the same but it will have more of a separation from the road with a boulevard which will be planted with trees. Also of interest to cyclists are the plans to have some bike parking facilities added, likely post and rings. There will be a new path that will be built from the buildings to the western end of the beach which is called Cherry Point. This was to be an asphalt trail but will likely be a soft surface trail. This trail runs along the 'Dog off leash' area of the beach and there were concerns about clashes between running dogs or and cyclists or rollerbladers. Martin Koob tcc-rep@tbn.ca
