One of the areas of the City of Toronto that didn't have any bike lanes was the former municipality of Scarborough. That changed this spring when the first lanes were painted on Sheppard Avenue between Kingston Road and Meadowvale Rd. This was done in conjunction with a road reconstruction project for that section of road that was completed last year. The lanes were painted this spring as the final touch to that project. Scarborough's first bike lanes start at Kingston Road and Sheppard Avenue. Now work is being done that will strech those lanes further east in conjunction with a road reconstruction project that is currently underway between Meadowvale Road and Morningside Avenue. Part of that reconstruction project includes the painting of bike lanes along that entire stretch. These two projects link to an existing Bikeway route. There is an off road path that runs along the west side of Meadowvale from Sheppard Avenue to the Toronto Zoo. These new routes will make biking to the Zoo a little safer. At Sheppard and Meadowvale you can see the end of the existing bike lane and the construction on the new section. Here is where you can follow the path up to the Toronto Zoo

In 2004 one of the candidate projects would link the Sheppard East bike lanes to the Highland Creek Trail. Bike lanes are proposed for Conlins Road between Sheppard and Military Trail as well as on Military Trail between Conlins and Old Kingston Road. Whether or not these go ahead next year will of course depend on the support of the local Councillor and Council approval. If they did, it would result in a route that could bring you from Lake Ontario at the mouth of Highland Creek to the Toronto Zoo. Martin Koob tcc-rep@tbn.ca
