At that first meeting representatives of various cycling organizations, and individuals interested in cycling issues met. It was a brainstorming session where the 40 participants discussed how these organizations and individuals could work together to raise the profile of cycling in the eyes of the general public and the politicians with the ultimate goal of promoting cycling as a form of transportation in Toronto and improving the conditions for cyclists in the city.

They talked about how to improve the networking among the various cycling organizations and cycling advocates. They also discussed how to expand this network to other organizations that are not necessarily cycling organizations but that have compatible goals. There was also discussion about how to reach out to the general public and politicians to encourage them to support cycling in general and the Toronto Bike Plan in particular. There was a feeling at the meeting that the timing is right for this type of coordinated action since there will be an election for a new Mayor and City Council this coming November. Having a Mayor and Council that are more supportive of the Toronto Bike Plan was seen to be an important goal by the participants.

One of the outcomes of this meeting was an agreement that there was a need for an umbrella organization that would facilitate the communication and networking among cyclists and cycling related organizations. On the Bike Summit II agenda is how to implement the many suggestions that were generated at the first meeting.

This meeting is open to any interested cyclists. If you are planning to come you are asked to R.S.V.P by calling 416-392-7592.
