Update to:
Portlands Energy Centre Meeting: December 8th, 2003 Posted: Dec-07-03

The Portlands Energy Centre is a power generating plan proposed for the Portlands area which will have an impact on the waterfront in this area and on the thousands of users of the Martin Goodman Trail that runs right along the proposed site of the plant. See previous article Residents push for Portlands Energy Centre Environmental Assessment The decision as to whether to conduct a full environmental assessment of the project has not been made. Paul Young of the South Riverdale Community Health Centre reports that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has received 120 requests for that to be done.

There will be a public meeting to update community members as to the status of the project. The details of the meeting are quoted in the announcement below.

Update on the Proposed Portlands Energy Centre.

In response to health and environmental concerns raised by the proposal to place an energy generation facility at the site of the former R.L. Hearn Generation Station on Unwin Avenue, we and many of your neighbours have requested that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment order a full Environmental Assessment to better determine if the project should be allowed to proceed. We are holding this meeting to update the community on the timing of the Ministry's decision and to discuss further direction and strategies.

When/Where: Wednesday February 11, 7:00 p.m. at the Ralph Thornton Centre, 2nd Floor, 765 Queen Street East (2 blocks east of Broadview).

The vision of a clean and green waterfront continues to face challenges. Residents who have been holding to this vision continue to work to see it realized.
