Update to:
Toronto Bike Plan Released Posted: Jun-28-01
Today, July 3, 2001, the Planning and Transportation Committee accepted the Toronto Bike Plan. The Plan was to be presented to the committee at 2:00 p.m. today but it was pushed back a couple of hours by an extended debate on the wisdom of a feasibility study of widening the DVP by four lanes in the Don River Valley as a means to reduce traffic congestion. The eventual outcome of that debate was to take no further action on that proposal. Although all those there for the Bike Plan item were pressed for time due to the delay in starting, a good presentation of the Toronto Bike Plan was make by Dan Egan and there were four deputations in support of TBP. Several councillors also spoke in favour of the Plan including Jack Layton and Olivia Chow who were not on the Planning and Transportation Committee as well as Pam McConnell and Joanne Flint who are members of the committee. There was no opposition to the plan voiced during the discussion of the TBP, although, as I sat through the previous item (on widening the DVP) I wondered if the TBP would be supported due to some strong statements during the previous DVP debate in support of increasing the number of cars in the downtown core, no mention of bikes as a means of reducing traffic congestion, and one comment specifically questioning the usefulness of bikes as a transportation option. My fears were unfounded as the motions supporting the TBP were unopposed in the final vote. The next step is that the TBP will be on the agenda of the next City Council Meeting which is slated for July 24th. This is hopefully the final step in adopting the Toronto Bike Plan. I will keep you posted with more details as they are available. While we are waiting for that you can read the bike plan. It is available on the Bike Plan web page and you can also contact you local City Councillor and let them know of your support for the plan. You can find your Councillor at this City Councillors web page. Martin Koob tcc-rep@tbn.ca
